Ever since Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement on November 17, 2017, the Duchess of Sussex has had her three-stone diamond engagement ring wedged on her left ring finger. This past year, however, Meghan was spotted without her iconic sparkler at multiple events. At first, reports stated that the rock was receiving repairs, but now, there’s speculation that the royal is actually redesigning her ring.
Meghan’s engagement ring already had a bit of a redesign in 2019, so the royal might update her ring once again. In 2017, Harry first popped the question with three diamonds set on a yellow gold band, which was Meghan’s favorite metal at the time. After she gave birth to Archie, the duo’s first child, the royal swapped the original band for a micro-pavé one.
Anya Walsh of online jeweler 77 Diamonds told GB News that it’s common for individuals to revamp their engagement rings, adding slender, more delicate bands or going for a more modern look. “Perhaps, she is looking to update her design to something a little more abstract,” Walsh posed. “She could retain the same three diamonds but rearrange them in a cluster that creates a more interesting pattern. This is something we have seen other celebrities do in the past few years.”
This past year, Meghan’s iconic ring hasn’t made an appearance at many of her functions, including a gala in May, a belated birthday lunch with friends in August, the Invictus Games in September, and Variety’s Power of Women gala in November. A source told Page Six in August that the reason why Meghan hasn’t been wearing her sparkler is because it’s being fixed. It’s three months later, however, and the bauble is still missing from her ring finger—which is why speculation about a redesign has started to swirl.
Meghan’s engagement ring is a valuable and sentimental design with a three-carat cushion-cut diamond from Botswana—where the duo went on their third date and fell in love—as the center stone, flanked by two round-cut diamonds, at about one carat each, sourced from the jewelry collection of Harry’s late mother, Princess Diana. Since some of Diana’s jewels are featured in the accessory, a source told New Idea magazine that Meghan’s brother-in-law, Prince William, is concerned about the “missing” ring. “He’s always protective of his mother’s legacy, and her jewelry was such an important part of that,” the insider said. “The memories she has of her wearing each piece will never go away.”
